Key elements represented
This graphic illustrates how an offshore wind energy system generates electricity at sea and delivers it to the onshore power grid. Wind turbines capture energy from offshore winds, convert it into electricity, and transmit that power through underwater and export cables to substations and the electrical grid on land. The image provides a simplified, end-to-end view of the key infrastructure involved in offshore wind power generation.
Rotor & Blades
Capture wind energy and spin to initiate power generation.
Tower & Foundation
Support the turbine structure and anchor it securely to the seabed.
Undersea (Inter-array) Cables
Carry electricity from individual turbines across the wind farm.
Offshore Substation
Collects power from multiple turbines and steps up voltage for efficient transmission.
Export Cable
Transmits electricity from the offshore substation to land.
Grid Connection
Delivers clean energy into the onshore electrical grid for distribution to homes and businesses.
