Offshore Wind System Overview

Key elements represented

This graphic illustrates how an offshore wind energy system generates electricity at sea and delivers it to the onshore power grid. Wind turbines capture energy from offshore winds, convert it into electricity, and transmit that power through underwater and export cables to substations and the electrical grid on land. The image provides a simplified, end-to-end view of the key infrastructure involved in offshore wind power generation.

Rotor & Blades

Capture wind energy and spin to initiate power generation.

Support the turbine structure and anchor it securely to the seabed.

Carry electricity from individual turbines across the wind farm.

Collects power from multiple turbines and steps up voltage for efficient transmission.

Transmits electricity from the offshore substation to land.

Delivers clean energy into the onshore electrical grid for distribution to homes and businesses.

What is Offshore Wind?

Offshore wind uses large wind turbines located in bodies of water to generate electricity.

Why offshore Wind matters?

  • Produces clean, carbon-free energy
  • Reduces reliance on fossil fuels
  • Supports climate and environmental goals
  • Creates thousands of jobs
