8 Hour Fall Prevention Why do you need a fall prevention course? The leading cause of death in the construction industry is from falls. As a result construction workers must have fall protection when working at a height of six feet or more. The 8 Hour Fall Prevention course provides training for workers on how to recognize, avoid, minimize, and correct fall hazards on jobsites. The course will cover fall hazards, competent person responsibilities, types of fall protection systems, calculation of fall distances, and decide on proper anchorage points among other things. Fall Prevention Training – NYC DOB Requirement As part of a new regulation (Local Law 196) the NYC Department of Buildings now requires that individuals receive a certain amount of DOB approved training in order to work on NYC construction projects. Among the training required for workers and supervisors is 8 hours of fall prevention training. Workers will also need a 30 hour construction training course and a 2 hour drug and alcohol prevention course to meet this requirement. 4 HOUR SCAFFOLD COURSE USER AND REFRESHER (SUPPORTED) Supported scaffold user training and refresher training program provides a basic explanation of supported scaffolds and supported scaffold components. The course will introduce the elements of supported scaffold safety and common supported scaffolds hazards while placing an emphasis on hazard reduction and prevention which includes fall protection, scaffold inspections, hazard recognition, and responding appropriately to emergency situations. 4 HOUR SUPPORTED SCAFFOLD – TRAINING REQUIREMENTS Local Law 52 of 2005 requires that all workers using supported scaffolds on construction sites in New York City receive this training and get there 4 Hour scaffold card. Individuals must re-take this training course every 4 years OSHA TRAINING NYC REQUIREMENT (LOCAL LAW 196) Local law 196 introduced new regulations for demolition and construction workers employed in the 5 boroughs that will require them to have a specific amount of training. Workers will be required to have a minimum of 30 hours of training and supervisors will be required to have a minimum of 62 hours of training by December 1st, 2018. In addition to the required amount of training individuals will also need to acquire the appropriate Site Safety Training (SST) card to prove they have completed the necessary training. As of June 1st, 2019 Workers will need a total of 40 hours of training which must include the 8-Hour fall Prevention course and the 2-Hour drug and alcohol Awareness course. As of June 1st, 2019 Supervisors will need a total of 60 hours of training which must include among other courses the 4 Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher Class. 2 Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness The 2 Hour Drugs and Alcohol Awareness class provides training for workers on drug and alcohol dependence disorders and how they affect people especially in the workplace. Students will learn the dangers of being under the influence in the workplace and the telltale signs to look for to determine if someone may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The course will cover both the effects of drugs and alcohol use on construction sites and also in personal life. 40-HOUR SITE SAFETY MANAGER TRAINING The Site Safety Manager class will train participants on how to be an effective site safety manager. The 40 Hour Safety Manager Course focuses on building construction that may be classified by the NYC Building Department. The Safety Manager Course also puts a strong emphasis on protecting, not only the safety of the general public, but for those working on the job site as well. This safety manager training is a prerequisite for individuals applying for their site safety coordinator, or construction superintendent license. The course is a comprehensive review of chapter 33 and the rules of the City of New York that pertain to the public protection. This course will prepare prospective candidates with safe work practices in alignment with NYC rules and regulations and prepare those candidates for the Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator exam. NYC SITE SAFETY REQUIREMENT As stated in the NYC Construction Codes – Title 28 General Administrative provisions, In order to become a Site Safety Manager and/or Coordinator Applicants must submit a certificate completion for the 40 hour certified safety manager training. In order to become a Construction Superintendent applicants must also submit a certification of completion for the 40 hour Site Safety Manager Course. New York City’s new requirement beginning July 1st 2016 states that faÇade projects requiring site-safety plans; buildings 15 stories or higher may now use a site safety manager, who completed construction safety manager training, designated rigging foreman, rigger, or qualified safety professional to oversee site safety on the project. How to become a safety manager? It is a requirement that the person designated on the project must have: 40-hour site safety manager training (and 7-hour refresher every 3 years thereafter); and 32-hour supported scaffold installer training (and 8-hour refresher ever 4 years thereafter); and 32-hour suspended scaffold supervisor training (and complete the 8-hour refresher every 4 years thereafter); and OSHA 30 or greater construction training.
